Mumbai reeled like a drunken sailor for the days it got flooded with torrential rains cutting off all avenues of transportation. I never thought that something like this could happen in cities, especially in the capital of a nation? Today life seems to have stopped in Delhi with just 3 hours of rain!! Aren’t Cities supposedly “Developed”! Economic development can substantially lower the danger of living close to nature, but where did we fail. How did his disaster happen?
The root of the word disaster (“bad star” in Greek) comes from an astrological theme in which the ancients used to refer to the destruction or deconstruction of a star as a disaster.
So where is the bad star ? it is us the super humans? Who have frustrated nature enough that it strikes back!!!
A disaster is the tragedy of a natural or human-made hazard (a hazard is a situation which poses a level of threat to life, health, property, or environment) that negatively affects society or environment. Developing countries suffer the greatest costs when a disaster hits – more than 95 percent of all deaths caused by disasters occur in developing countries, and losses due to natural disasters are 20 times greater (as a percentage of GDP) in developing countries than in industrialized countries.
A major reason the casualty rate was so high was inadequate warning. Will this hold good for us the “developed world?”
In cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai etc, I would say a major reason is “Lack of Preparedness”, by us the developed and civilized people!
